Food Production
Food production involves resources that have associated economic and environmental impacts. Since agriculture utilizes the majority of freshwater supply, it is estimated that food waste is responsible for one quarter of total freshwater use. Due to the amount of fossil fuel energy used to produce food, wasted food it is the reason behind for ~300 million barrels of oil per year, representing ~4% of the total US oil consumption in 2003. In addition, food waste rotting in landfills produces substantial quantities of methane.
Why Food Waste?
It is essential for us to address food waste due to its environmental concerns. However, our team understands the limits of our impacts as average citizens who cannot have a grand effect on the food industry, and made this website to allow people to find smaller, everyday methods to contribute to the fight against food waste. We can help fight food waste by educating ourselves, changing our shopping and eating habits, and looking into environmentally-friendly alternatives to waste, such as composting.
